Late George III Mahogany D-end Extending Dining Table; Manner of Robert Adam

18th century
Description

DESCRIPTION

A late George III mahogany D-end extending dining table in the manner of Robert Adam, comprising a pair of D-end tables and two additional leaves, allowing it to be arranged in a variety of configurations.

The table is decorated with a carved frieze incorporating fluting, paterae and draped swags, and stands on square tapering legs carved with husks and terminating in spade feet. The restrained Neoclassical decoration reflects the influence of Robert Adam's designs during the late eighteenth century.

With both leaves fitted, the table provides seating for larger gatherings while retaining balanced proportions. The D-end sections may also be used independently as console or side tables when not assembled as a dining table, making it a practical and versatile piece.

DIMENSIONS

Height: 73cm

Width: 269cm (with both leaves fitted)

Depth: 115cm

CONDITION

The table is in good, solid condition and presents well overall. There are minor marks, knocks and scratches consistent with its age and use, and some minor repairs to the carved frieze. The extended sections are secure when fitted, and both additional leaves are present. Overall, it is a well-preserved example, ready for everyday use.

As with all antique and vintage furniture, this piece has been used and enjoyed over many years and should be expected to show signs of age and use. We aim to describe any significant faults, repairs or alterations as accurately and honestly as possible. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late eighteenth century, a George III D-end dining table consists of two semi-circular end sections that can be used separately or connected with additional leaves to accommodate large gatherings.

These tables were typically crafted from solid mahogany or high-quality mahogany veneers, featuring hand-cut joinery, brass table forks or clips, and tapered or turned legs.

Authentic pieces display characteristics of late eighteenth-century craftsmanship, such as hand-planed timbers, original brass joining hardware, hand-carved classical decorative motifs like paterae or fluting, and natural timber age patina.

Combine the formal mahogany table with modern upholstered dining chairs or minimalist lighting fixtures to create a balanced contrast between classical period woodwork and contemporary design elements.

Preserve the finish by cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth, applying beeswax polish sparingly along the grain, and avoiding direct sunlight, extreme humidity, or unshielded heat sources.
