Large Pre Revolution French Sterling Silver Beaker Cup C1760 Antique 160g 18thc

18th century
Description

A rare pre revolution era large sterling silver French cup. It is hallmarked with various early marks and a tiny mark to the rim - its tests as high grade silver. It is also marked G HOMON (N in reverse) on the rim, I assume this is the original owner. I would date it to c1760-1780 by its style or possibly earlier. It is in superb condition for its age with just one small dimple - see final photo. It measures 5 inches (12.8cms) tall by 4 inches across the rim and weighs 160g. A rare early piece.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this French Silver Antique Beaker to the 1700s.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An 18th-century French silver beaker, historically known as a gobelet, is a stemless silver drinking vessel popular in pre-Revolutionary France for personal dining and formal table settings.

Silver beakers from this era were typically hand-hammered from high-purity silver sheet metal, featuring hand-carved or moulded gadrooned bases and custom engraved lettering or maker stamps near the rim.

Pre-Revolutionary French silver is identified by specific regional guild marks, charge marks, and discharge marks stamped prior to the implementation of the standardized French decimal hallmark system in 1797.

An antique silver beaker functions as a stationery holder on a desk, a vessel for short floral displays on a sideboard, or as part of a styled barware arrangement on a decorative tray.

Clean antique silver using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish applied with a soft cotton cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips or ultrasonic cleaners that strip natural historic patination.
