'Neiriz' Afshar Rug, South-east Persia, Circa 1880, 1.71m X 1.30m

19th century
Description

Neiriz is a town in Kirman province of South-East Persia where the nomadic Afshar tribe migrated for centuries and eventually settled. Dating to the last quarter of the 19th century, this lovely rug reveals both the nomadic origins of its weaver, and the influence of court and urban designs which the Afshar people must have been exposed to. The structure and materials are clearly tribal in character. It is woven on a wool foundation, and knotted with soft hand-spun wool and exquisite natural dyes. Note the delightful sky-blue in the field, the amber and magenta shades which one associates with the Neiriz group of Afshar weavings. As for the design, the repeating botehs which fill the field is clearly of urban origin as seen on Kirman rugs and textiles. However, the charming interpretation, the angular drawing of the botehs, the small squares and spontaneous filler ornaments scattered through the design add interest and reveal the freedom of the weaver. The superb borders also have that combination of urban formality and tribal expressiveness, and frame the composition beautifully. This is a lovely antique tribal rug which should appeal to both collectors and those with a discerning eye looking for a decorative rug for the home or office. Excellent condition, professionally cleaned. Unusually, the kilim ends are complete and intact, a sure sign that this rug has been cherished by its previous owners through the generations.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Afshar rugs originate from nomadic and semi-nomadic weavers in South-East Persia. They are recognised for geometric floral designs, repetitive boteh patterns, and durable hand-knotted construction using natural dye palettes.

Weavers used hand-spun sheeps wool for the pile, along with wool or cotton foundations. Dyes were derived from natural organic sources such as madder root, indigo, and walnut husks.

Authentic examples display natural abrash colour variations, slight geometric irregularities from hand-loom weaving, flexible hand-knotted wool foundations, and distinct tribal border motifs.

Position the carpet to anchor a seating area or study desk, allowing its geometric patterns to contrast with neutral contemporary furniture and natural wood flooring.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush, clean spills immediately with cold water, use a protective rug pad underneath, and seek professional specialist cleaning when required.
