A substantial and atmospheric Highland landscape showing Loch Etive, Argyllshire, with several cattle standing at the water’s edge in the foreground, their forms and reflections captured in the still surface of the loch.
To the left a rocky, wooded bank frames the scene, its rich browns and greens contrasting with the reflective water and the pale golden tones of the distant hillside. The painterly handling of the landscape, particularly in the foliage, hillside and sky, demonstrates the confident brushwork and naturalistic palette associated with late Victorian British landscape painting.
Signed H. D. Hillier lower left.
The reverse inscribed “Loch Etive, Argyllshire - H. D. Hillier.”
Presented in a large and ornate gilt frame with scrolling foliate decoration.
Henry H. Parker, who at times worked under the name H. D. Hillier, was a British landscape painter known for atmospheric views of the Scottish Highlands and rural Britain, often incorporating cattle and reflective water to create depth and tranquillity within his compositions.
