Sakazuki are shallow, saucer-like vessels used for drinking sake during formal ceremonies and celebrations in Japan. Crafted with a wooden base and coated in urushi lacquer, these pieces frequently feature gilded maki-e decoration depicting classic landscapes or natural scenes.

These cups were produced by applying multiple thin layers of natural urushi tree sap over a lightweight carved wooden core. Gilding was achieved using the maki-e method, where fine gold powder was sprinkled directly onto damp lacquer before curing.

Authentic pieces feature light natural wood structures underneath, smooth hand-applied lacquer layers, and finely detailed hand-painted maki-e motifs. Natural age wear often appears along the base rims or raised edges.
