18th Century George II Period Walnut Chest on Chest, C1740

18th century
Description

Very Fine Mid 18th-Century George II Burr Walnut Chest on Chest (Tallboy)

A superb and well proportioned mid 18th-century George II period burr walnut chest on chest, of outstanding original condition, colour and patina, circa 1740. The upper section, surmounted by a moulded cornice, is arranged as two short drawers over three graduated long drawers. Below, a moulded waist separates the lower section, fitted with a further three graduated long drawers, creating the classic “chest-on-chest” or tallboy form so prized in Georgian interiors.

Each drawer front is finely veneered in beautifully figured, book matched burr walnut, with crossbanded borders and delicate cockbeaded edges. The sides are similarly veneered and crossbanded, underlining the quality of the piece from every angle. All drawers are oak lined, a hallmark of first rate 18th-century cabinetmaking. This tallboy retains its original, high quality mid 18th-century brassware throughout, including pierced fret backplate handles and matching escutcheons, together with original steel locks. It stands on a moulded plinth base with original bracket feet, completing its elegant silhouette.

Presented in exceptional, unrestored condition, this chest on chest has developed a wonderfully warm, rich colour and a deep, mellow patina that only centuries of careful use can produce.

A classic example of George II period furniture, combining superb burr walnut figuring, refined proportions and outstanding craftsmanship, this very fine tallboy offers both generous storage and great decorative presence. It would form a distinguished focal point in any sophisticated interior, traditional or contemporary.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II chest on chest, or tallboy, is a two-part English case furniture design produced between 1727 and 1760. It consists of an upper chest mounted onto a wider lower chest, typically constructed from walnut or mahogany with architectural mouldings and bracket feet.

Pieces from this era typically feature walnut veneers laid over pine or oak carcasses, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, oak drawer linings, featherbanded borders, and cast brass drop handles with pierced backplates.

Authentic pieces feature signs of hand-planing on rear panels, uneven hand-cut dovetail joints, shrinkage gaps consistent with age, period-correct drawer runners showing natural wear, and original brass mounting holes inside drawer fronts.

A tallboy serves as a vertical focal point in a bedroom, hallway, or drawing room. It balances modern minimalist decor when placed against neutral walls, complemented by modern artwork or contemporary lighting nearby.

Apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth, rubbing with the grain. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement and fading.
