With an ochre lined rim, surrounding radiating flower filled panels. The centre of the dish decorated with a scene of a Chinese boy raising a flag and a flower. The rear with a small foot rim and makers mark.

Date circa 1750.

Height 1 3/4 inches, 4.5cm.

Diameter 11 3/4 inches, 30cm.

Delftware refers to tin-glazed earthenware produced primarily in the Netherlands and Great Britain starting in the sixteenth century. It was created as an accessible European alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, featuring distinctive cobalt blue hand-painted designs on an opaque white glaze background.

Traditional Delftware was constructed from red or buff clay dipped in a tin oxide liquid glaze to achieve an opaque white finish. Decorative patterns were painted onto the unfired tin glaze using metal oxides, such as cobalt oxide for blue, before undergoing a single or double kiln firing process.

Authentic 18th-century tin-glazed earthenware generally features visible hand-painting irregularities, a slightly soft earthenware body underneath glaze chips, and distinctive rim wear or fritting. Additionally, period pieces display ochre or yellow glazed edges, stilt marks on the reverse from kiln firing, and an unglazed or thinly glazed back.
