Brief Description:

This is a fabulous 18th-century French Delft/Faience Polychrome Chinoiserie Charger Dish.

Circa 1770-1780, and probably from the Nevers region.

The vibrant piece is hand-painted with an adorable Chinese man who is seated on a rock, holding an umbrella in one hand, and accompanied by a small butterfly flying above.

The piece is hand-painted in vibrant colours, including manganese, blue, yellow, green, yellow and orange.

French faience is a form of fine earthenware coated with an opaque white tin glaze, developed in France during the late sixteenth and eighteenth centuries as an alternative to imported Chinese porcelain.

Pieces were shaped from local reddish or buff clay, kiln-fired into bisque, dipped in a liquid tin glaze, and hand-painted with metal oxide pigments such as cobalt blue, manganese purple, and antimony yellow before undergoing a final firing.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit irregular hand-lobed edges, minor glaze losses along raised rims exposing the clay underneath, stilt marks from kiln supports on the reverse, and subtle hand-painted variation in the glaze work.

An antique faience charger can be displayed on a dark wood mantelpiece using a plate stand, integrated into a traditional wall-mounted plate gallery, or arranged within an open dresser in a dining space.
