Description

Rare Regency Mahogany Fold-Over Card Table by Laver Oliver

Item Code: LC1433

A rare Regency period mahogany fold-over card table by Laver Oliver of Bury St Edmunds, dating from circa 1810.

The table retains its engraved brass patent plate, numbered 19 and inscribed “Oliver’s Patent, Bury St Edmunds.” The rectangular top has rounded front corners and attractive mahogany figuring, opening to reveal a green baize-lined playing surface.

The patented action allows the top to rotate and unfold above the pedestal, while also revealing a useful storage compartment beneath.

Raised on a finely turned central column above four swept legs, finished with brass caps and castors.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the British Regency period in the early 19th century, card tables feature hinged fold-over or swivel tops designed for playing card games and folding flat against walls when not in use.

These pieces were crafted primarily from solid mahogany and flame mahogany veneers, often set on pine or oak secondary framing and finished with brass castors.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, turned pedestal columns ending in splayed sabre legs, period brass castors, and natural age-related patination.

Position the piece closed against a wall as a hallway console table, styled with table lamps or modern artwork, or open it in a living space as an occasional games table.

Dust regularly using a soft dry cloth, nourish the timber with high-grade beeswax twice yearly, and keep the table positioned away from direct heat sources and harsh sunlight.
