Antique Regency Style Mahogany Leather Top Desk / Writing Table

1920 - 1940
Description

A gorgeous antique Regency style mahogany leather top desk / writing table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930’s period.

It is of outstanding quality and is a lovely, useful size. The flame mahogany grain patterns on the drawers are stunning and they have fine, hand cut dovetailed joints. There are wonderful beaded borders around the drawer fronts, side and back panels. The back is also nicely polished so this can be used as a free standing item. It stands on a beautiful stretchered base with gorgeous harp shaped legs that stand on brass capped casters. The top has a lovely pierced brass gallery around the back and sides, with cross banded edges and an inset slightly faded green leather writing surface with gold tooling around the edges.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age. The leather has acquired a gorgeous colour tone and patina, with just the right amount of wear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency style writing tables are defined by classical proportions, dark wood veneers such as mahogany or rosewood, leather writing inserts, and neoclassical decorative elements like lyre legs and brass galleries.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, hand-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass drawer handles, and cast brass castors with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints.

Look for period-correct joinery, natural wear on the brass hardware, authentic hand-tooling on the leather inset, and splayed legs or lyre supports resting on original brass castors.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or living room, paired with a modern ergonomic or minimalist chair to contrast historical craftsmanship with modern functionality.

Dust the wood regularly with a microfibre cloth and apply beeswax annually to protect the polish, while treating the leather insert with specialised leather balm to prevent drying or cracking.
