Royal Worcester Richard Sebright Signed Painted Fruit Cabinet Plate, 1923

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

Produced by the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company, this exceptional cabinet plate bears the date code for 1923 and is signed by the celebrated fruit painter Richard Sebright. The underside retains the original Bonhams auction labels, providing documented auction provenance.

The central reserve is painted with two ripe apricots, three gooseberries and delicate blossom against a characteristic mossy ground. Surrounding the fruit study is an elaborate deep cobalt blue border, lavishly enriched with finely acid-etched hand-applied gold leaf incorporating stylised roses, scrolling foliage and an inner gilt leaf wreath. This highly labour-intensive decoration is characteristic of Royal Worcester's finest cabinet plates of the period. Comparable Pattern C1970 services, many painted by Richard Sebright, remain among the factory's most desirable productions.

Richard Sebright (1868-1951) is officially recognised as the greatest fruit painter in Royal Worcester's history. During more than sixty years associated with the factory, he perfected its celebrated Painted Fruit tradition, and his finest signed works are regarded as museum-quality examples of English porcelain.

The underside bears the authentic Royal Worcester factory mark with the date code for 1923 together with pattern number C1970.

Dimensions:

• Weight: 430 g

• Diameter: 23.2 cm

• Height: 2.5 cm

Condition:

Three fine surface glaze craze lines are present on the reverse. Examined under UV light, they do not extend into the porcelain body and are confined to the glaze. No cracks are visible from the front. Fine age-related crazing is visible only under magnification. The hand-painted decoration, enamels and gilding remain in excellent antique condition.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Royal Worcester painted fruit porcelain became a signature style characterised by still-life compositions of fruit against naturalistic backgrounds. Master artists signed individual works, creating decorative tableware and display pieces.

These pieces were crafted using fine bone china, which provided a durable yet translucent base for painting. Multiple firings were required to set the hand-painted enamel colours and heavy gold leaf gilding applied to the raised scrollwork and rims.

Authentic pieces feature the printed Royal Worcester factory mark on the underside, accompanied by a date code system using dots and symbols to specify the exact year of production. Hand-painted examples typically bear the artists signature within or near the central composition.

Displaying decorative porcelain on an easel stand upon a sideboard or within a glass-fronted cabinet adds historical detail to modern rooms. Grouping multiple plates together on a wall also creates a structured focal point in dining areas or hallways.

Gilded porcelain should be dusted gently with a soft microfibre cloth to prevent scratching the gold surface. Abrasive cleaners, chemical solutions, and dishwashers must be avoided, as they degrade hand-painted enamels and gold leaf over time.
