Wine labels, originally called bottle tickets, emerged in the eighteenth century as dark glass decanters became popular on dining tables. Because the opaque or faceted glass concealed the contents, silver plaques engraved with the liquids name were suspended around the bottle neck for identification.

Authentic Georgian silver labels typically bear official British hallmarks, such as the sovereigns head duty mark, makers initials, sterling lion passant, and a town mark. Due to their small size, some smaller tickets were stamped with reduced hallmarks, such as just a makers mark and lion.
