Russian Papier-mâché Lacquer Cigarette Case Attributed to the Vishnyakov Workshop, C.1850-1870

19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

An attractive Russian papier-mâché lacquer cigarette case attributed to the celebrated Vishnyakov workshop and dating to the mid-19th century. The lid is decorated with a finely painted Russian Winter Troika executed in the traditional over-the-gold technique (pismo po skvoznomu), in which transparent oil paints were applied over gold leaf to create a distinctive luminous effect. The animated composition, expressive horses and confident brushwork reflect the finest traditions of Russian lacquer miniature painting.

The book-form case is fitted with a substantial recessed brass piano hinge, illustrating the high standard of craftsmanship associated with quality Russian lacquer work. The principal miniature is preserved in exceptional condition with remarkable retention of the original lacquer and gilding. UV examination revealed no evidence of later overpainting, restoration or concealed cracks within the painted scene.

During the 19th century, Russian lacquer artists increasingly combined academic pictorial traditions with romanticized folklore, producing the narrative scenes for which Fedoskino lacquer became famous. The Vishnyakov manufactory ranked among the leading Russian producers of lacquer miniatures and achieved major success, receiving numerous medals and awards at national industrial and art exhibitions.

Combining excellent artistic quality, an attractive attribution to the Vishnyakov workshop and outstanding preservation, this is a scarce collector's piece and an impressive example of Imperial Russian lacquer art.

Dimensions:

• Weight 100 g. Height 2.6 cm. Length 10 cm. Width 8.9 cm

Condition:

The principal painted miniature is in excellent condition, with only minimal age-related specks and exceptional preservation of the original lacquer and gilding. UV examination revealed no overpainting, restoration or cracks within the principal painted image. The original cinnabar-red interior remains in very good condition, with minor age-related cracks along the inner edge. The reverse retains its original black lacquer with slight varnish darkening, while the metal components show oxidation. The spring-loaded catch remains in perfect working order, opening and closing with a sharp, crisp click.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Russian lacquer boxes originated in the late 18th century, developing into a recognised folk art tradition centred on workshops such as Lukutin and Vishnyakov, which produced hand-painted miniature scenes on papier-mache.

Craftsmen boiled strips of cardboard in linseed oil, pressed them under high pressure, baked them, and applied multiple layers of black and clear lacquer alongside gold foil before painting with egg tempera or oil paint.

Authentic pieces feature craquelure within the varnish layer, gold foil underlays beneath the painted ground, hand-painted brushwork rather than printed transfers, and occasionally maker marks stamped on the interior.

Small lacquer cases can be displayed open or closed atop a stack of reference books on a console table, curated inside a glazed cabinet, or positioned on an office desk alongside metal accessories.

Keep lacquer items away from direct sunlight, central heating sources, and moisture, wiping only with a dry microfibre cloth without using liquid polishes or solvent cleaners.
