19th Century Tall Oak Globe Wernicke Bookcase, C1890

19th century
Description

Stunning Tall Oak Six-Section Globe Wernicke Bookcase, c.1890

A superb and very rare tall solid oak Globe Wernicke six section stacking barrister bookcase, dating from around 1890. This impressive Victorian example offers both exceptional quality and great versatility, making it ideal for a library, study, living room, office, or creative workspace.

The bookcase is crowned with a moulded cornice and comprises six graduated glazed sections, each with its original up-and-over glass door, original mechanism, and small brass knob handle. The whole piece stands on a moulded plinth, with characteristic copper strapping to the sides. The oak retains a beautiful colour and grain, and the original maker’s badge is present, stamped: “The Globe Wernicke & Co Ltd – Office & Library Furnishers – London.”

All doors run smoothly and are in excellent working order. The larger section sizes are particularly scarce and provide generous storage and display capacity. As with all true sectional bookcases, the tiers can be rearranged or removed entirely, allowing the height to be adjusted and surplus sections stored if required. This flexibility means the piece can be adapted to many interiors and uses.

Highly sought after for both its aesthetics and practicality, this antique Globe Wernicke bookcase is perfect for housing books, displaying collections, or storing fabrics and materials in craft rooms and studios. A fine and functional example of late 19th-century English office and library furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Globe Wernicke bookcase is a modular storage system patented in the late 19th century, constructed from individual glazed tiers that stack together to allow flexible configuration and transport.

These bookcases were predominantly built using solid oak, mahogany, or walnut, fitted with glass panes and brass or iron mechanism hardware to enable the doors to lift and slide back horizontally.

Authentic pieces feature paper or metal makers labels marked Globe Wernicke, specific metal side bands connecting the modules, and up-and-over glazed door mechanisms.

A tall oak sectional bookcase serves as a structured display unit in a home office, hallway, or living space, providing dust-free storage for books, pottery, or curated objects.

Routine dusting with a lint-free cloth and periodic application of natural beeswax polish preserves the oak, while glass cleaner applied directly to a cloth prevents moisture from touching the wood finish.
