A joyous and engaging carving in oak of the nativity depicting Joseph holding a candle signifying the birth of the light of hope, two angels hold the Christ child, another holds Mary’s robes, there are four onlookers and two beasts in the background. The composition is accomplished and considered with a wooden post holding the thatched roof being central to the carving. giving the piece symmetry. The faces have a wonderful serenity. It retains a historic polychrome decoration and has an authentic surface. A beautiful and enthralling work of art.

France, possibly Burgundy. Circa 1500
