Description

This magnificent salt-bag - 'namakdan' in Persian, was made by Lori-Bakhtiari tribes in the Chahar Mahal region of western Persia during the last quarter 19th century.

The face of the bag is very finely woven in soumak technique comprising a stylised 'tree' in the central panel with 'double-headed sunbirds' in white cotton highlighting.

The base of the bag is in knotted-pile, complete with plain-weave back, consisting of typical Bakhtiari narrow, horizontal bands of natural colours and braided handles on each sIde of the neck.

This is a stunning salt-bag in great condition.
