A Fine Mahogany Late 19th Century Envelope Card Table by Antoine Lampre, Paris.

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Loveday Antiques
Description

A fine quality late 19th Century / early 20th Century envelope card table with ormolu mounts by Lampre of Paris

French Paris Circa 1900.

Of envelope form this card table is twisted for the table to be opened allowing each leaf to rest on the baized under section. Tables of this form were first introduced in France in the Louis XVI period and this piece, with its exceptionally fine gilt bronze mounts, is very much in the late 18th century taste. Veneered throughout in finely figured and plum pudding mottled mahogany, this piece has real presence and epitomises understated luxury. The overhanging square top has fine ormolu edging and there are mounts to the edges of the drawer in the frieze and finely cast ormolu rosettes to each corner block. The piece retains its original drawer handle which is also finely cast and there are fillet-type mounts inlaid in to the fluting at the top of each leg.

The piece is inscribed with the name of its maker Lampre of Paris. Based on the Rue St. Honore, the firm was named after its founder Antoine Lampre who exhibited furniture at the Universelle Expositions in both 1878 and 1889, winning bronze medals on both occasions. The firm is discussed in D. Ledoux-Lebard, Le mobilier franais du XIXe siecle, Paris 1998 p. 401

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An envelope card table is a compact gaming table featuring four triangular top flaps that unfold outward like an envelope to reveal a larger playing surface. Popularised in the late 19th century, these tables allowed multi-functional use as both occasional side tables and dedicated card surfaces.

Craftsmen typically utilised solid and veneered hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often embellished with gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts. The interior playing surface frequently featured baize or felt cloth, while brass collars and sabots reinforced the legs.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished joinery, precise rotating mechanisms for the top, and finely chased gilt-bronze mounts fixed with period screws. Look for maker stamps or brass plaque labels on the drawer linings or underside of the frame.

Position the table folded closed in an empty corner, hallway, or beside a sofa to serve as an occasional side table. Pair it with modern seating or simple decorative objects to highlight the contrast between gilded classical details and clean contemporary lines.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft dry microfibre cloth and apply high-quality beeswax along the grain. Keep the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight, and dust gilt-bronze mounts gently with a soft dry brush.
