Victorian Pine Dresser Base or Sideboard

19th century
Description

A large mid 19th century pine dresser base or sideboard, possibly originating from the Lancashire area, standing on turned bun feet with seven drawers in total, and decorative turned mouldings at each side. The upper three drawers have shaped fronts and a hidden finger pull recess on the underside. The dresser has a lovely blonde colour and a nice amount of wear reflecting its use through the years.

It is more common to see this style of dresser base with a central cupboard, but this one instead has four nice wide drawers, plus the three above, which I think makes it more practical. It would work well in a kitchen or dining room for storing crockery and cutlery etc.

Condition: Overall this is in very good condition with the wear and patina you would expect from an item of this age. The drawer handles are not original and one of them doesn’t completely cover the hole left by a previous handle - please see the photos. One of the drawers has a small piece of new timber spliced into the top edge. All the drawers open and close well. A lovely piece of furniture!

Dimensions:

Width - 181cm

Depth - 56.5cm

Height - 93cm maximum including upstand, 84.5cm height to the top.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian pine dresser base is a low storage cabinet produced during the nineteenth century, featuring a flat counter top over a combination of drawers or cupboards. Originally designed for utilitarian kitchen use or food preparation in country houses, these pieces often served as the foundation for a removable plate rack.

Victorian pine furniture was typically constructed from Scots pine or imported Baltic red pine. Common construction details include hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, tongue-and-groove backboards, turned wooden feet, and solid pine drawer bases secured with traditional animal hide glues.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display signs of historical wear, hand-planed surfaces on unexposed areas, and original hand-cut dovetailing on the drawers. Look for natural shrinkage gaps in timber joints, genuine oxidisation around brass fittings, and irregular saw marks on the back panels.

A pine dresser base functions effectively as a sideboard in a dining room, a media console in a living space, or a hallway credenza. Pair the natural timber with neutral wall colours, contemporary stone ceramics, and framed artwork to balance historical texture with modern decor.

Maintain unsealed or waxed pine by applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year to prevent timber drying. Dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth, clean up spills immediately, and position the piece away from direct heat sources and radiators to minimise timber warping.
