Primitive 18th Century Lambing Chair

18th century
Description

A good example of a small primitive settle or lambing chair dating from the late 18th Century. It has a thick seat, high wing shaped sides to keep away drafts and two wide planks forming the back. It is made from elm and oak with a simple nailed construction and the most wonderful patina with some remains of dark green paint around the base in places.

It is in good condition for its age and is generally strong and sturdy. There are lots of signs of age and use, various knocks and marks, some splits and old repairs but this has all helped to develop its lovely patina. There are some signs of historic worm in places which has all been treated as a precaution. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A lambing chair is a traditional form of British vernacular furniture, characteristically featuring high winged sides and an enclosed panel back designed to protect the occupant from draughts near open hearths in rural dwellings.

These chairs were typically constructed using native regional hardwoods such as oak, elm, or ash, joined using simple board construction and hand-driven wooden pegs.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-planed timber surfaces, irregular saw marks, peg joinery, and natural wear patterns on the armrests, seat, and base consistent with age and usage.

Positioning a lambing chair beside a fireplace or in a quiet corner creates a striking focal point, complemented by neutral wool throws or modern textured textiles to balance the dark timber.

Maintain the timber by keeping the chair away from direct heat sources and applying a coat of clear beeswax polish annually to preserve the natural patina and protect against drying.
