96 X 616cm Fine Antique Kurdish 'Mina Khani' Long Runner

19th century
Description

'Mina Khani' refers to the name of one of the best, and my favourite, designs. It is the repeat flowerheads connected by a leafy vine and no one does it better than the Kurds. In this early example, the flowers are beautifully articulated, with a strong sense of stirring movement within the field. A veritable and gorgeous Persian garden!

Superb colours of golden yellow, coral, light blue and various greens are set off to perfection on the midnight blue ground.

3'2" x 20'3"

Declaration

James Cohen Antique Carpets has dated this Antique Kurdish Mina Khani Runner to the 1860s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Mina Khani motif is a traditional Persian pattern characterised by an all-over repeating grid or lattice containing large circular floral rosettes interconnected by smaller blossoms and vines, historically woven by Kurdish and North-West Persian tribes.

Traditional Kurdish carpets are typically hand-knotted using locally sourced, hand-spun wool for both the pile and the foundation (warp and weft), coloured with natural plant and mineral dyes.

Authentic pieces feature a flexible hand-knotted wool foundation, slight colour variations known as abrash caused by hand-dyed wool batches, tribal motifs woven into the borders, and asymmetrical design elements.

Long runners are best positioned in entrance hallways, gallery corridors, or wide landing spaces where their linear proportion anchors the space while adding warmth and sound insulation over timber or stone floors.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating beater bar to protect the wool fibers, rotate the carpet annually to ensure even foot traffic distribution, and use a quality underlay to prevent slipping and wear.
