Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Canterbury is a low, tiered piece of mobile furniture featuring open vertical partitions created primarily to store sheet music, bound volumes, or periodicals. Named after the Archbishop of Canterbury who reportedly ordered the first example in the late 18th century, it became a staple of Victorian drawing rooms.

Victorian Canterburys are predominantly constructed from rich hardwoods such as burr walnut, mahogany, or rosewood. Standard construction features include turned spindle dividers, fine marquetry or boxwood stringing inlays, brass gallery rims along the upper tier, a base drawer, and turned legs fitted with brass castors.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, natural oxidisation on the underside of the wood, and hand-turned spindle work. Veneers on period pieces show subtle grain irregularities and surface patina, while the brass castors often feature period maker stamps or aged wear patterns.

An antique Canterbury functions effectively as an occasional side table beside a sofa or reading chair. The open vertical divisions can hold modern magazines, art books, or vinyl records, while the top surface provides space for a table lamp or small decorative object.

Dust the wood regularly using a dry microfiber cloth, following the grain direction. To maintain the luster of burr walnut, apply a high-grade beesmear wax sparingly twice a year and buff gently, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid veneer lifting or colour fading.
