Victorian Oak Partner’s Desk

19th century
Description

A good quality Victorian oak partner's desk dating from the mid to late 19th century. It has two drawers on both sides with turned knobs. The top has a good quality green leather writing surface with gilt tooled edging and it stands on turned legs with its original castors.

It is a good large size with ample leg room of 23 3/4" (60cm).

The desk is in very good condition with a lovely warm colour. It is generally clean and tidy throughout and the writing surface is in good order. The drawers open smoothly and the desk moves well on its castors. There are normal signs of light wear and age, some minor marks and wear on the leather, a few odd marks in the drawers and a small chip on one knob but nothing detrimental or untoward and it displays beautifully. It has been gently cleaned and polished and is ready for use.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 19th century, a partners desk is designed to accommodate two people working face-to-face, often featuring drawers or cupboards on both sides, robust timber construction, and a leather-lined writing surface.

Victorian writing desks were commonly constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, frequently accented with gilded leather inset surfaces, turned wooden or brass handles, and castors for mobility.

Authentic 19th-century desks exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawers, original brass lock plates, natural surface patination, and proportional wear on the wooden feet or castors.

Position the desk as a focal point in a home office or library, juxtaposing the rich oak tones and leather top with modern brass lighting and neutral contemporary textiles.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically, while using specialised leather conditioner sparingly to preserve the hide surface without damaging the gilt tooling.
