Superb Minton Aesthetic Period Pierced Porcelain Plate W.s. Coleman Fairy & Squirrel C.1870

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

A fabulous Victorian aesthetic period porcelain cabinet plate by Minton, with reticulated rim with six oval roundels. Superbly painted by Willian Stephen Coleman, a delightful scene of a fairy with beautiful butterfly wings. Stood on a grassy mound, he is trying to capture a squirrel sat on the branch of a small oak tree. He is offering out acorns to the squirrel whilst clutching to his side a small cage with the door open ready. Signed Coleman at the bottom. The pierced rim border is coloured with a celeste blue ground and very finely edged inside each reticulation with gilt. The roundels have raised spoke and beaded gilding and inside this section is a gilt layered fish scale border. Finished with a gilt rim.

The reverse bears the impressed Minton factory mark, Victorian registration lozenge, artist monogram for the gilding, design number, and retail stamp for W. P. & G Phillips, Art Pottery Studios, 359 Oxford Street, London, the stamp itself in aesthetic style as a pair of Japanese fans. The Minton date cypher can't be read but the registration mark is dated for 1870, an early piece decorated by Coleman before he moved to direct the Minton Art Studio in London in 1871, where he then specialised in earthenware.

References: The Dictionary Of Minton, Atterbury & Batkin; Minton - The First Two Hundred Years Of Design & Production, Jones. Also in the latter, page 58 shows a cup and saucer with this same stunning hand pierced and gilded border, the body decorated by Christopher Dresser (attributed).

It measures 24.1cm (9 1/2") wide.

In superb condition with no damage, repair or restoration and no discernible handling wear.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Aesthetic Movement ceramics from the late 19th century emphasize decorative beauty, naturalistic themes, asymmetric compositions, and oriental influence, moving away from heavy Victorian historicism towards refined artistic expression.

Victorian reticulated or pierced plates were crafted by carefully cutting geometric or openwork patterns into the soft porcelain body prior to firing, followed by hand-glazing, enamel painting, and gilt finishing.

Authentic 19th-century Minton porcelain typically features impressed or printed makers marks, year cyphers, pattern numbers, and fine hand-painted details combined with high-quality gilding.

Displaying an antique cabinet plate on a stand atop a sideboard or mounting a curated collection on a wall adds artistic interest and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Gilded and hand-painted porcelain should be dusted with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or gently washed in lukewarm water with mild detergent; abrasive cleaners and dishwashers must be avoided to preserve enamel and gilding.
