1900 - 1920
For Sale by Fox Fine Art
Description

Monogrammed "TG", Late 19th Century Symbolist / Pre-Raphaelite Oil Painting

A captivating late 19th-century oil painting imbued with imaginative symbolism and strong Pre-Raphaelite influences. Rich in allegorical content, the composition invites interpretation beyond its literal subject, reflecting the Symbolist movement's fascination with spirituality, mythology, and hidden meaning. The prominent moon serves as a timeless symbol of femininity, transformation, the cyclical nature of life, and the rhythms of existence.

The work is signed with the monogram "TG" and is tentatively attributed to Thomas Gotch (1854–1931). It is painted on a Reeves of London canvas, suggesting an English origin. The manufacturer's stamp on the reverse dates the canvas to 1899, while the letter "D" indicates one of Reeves' higher-quality, more expensive canvases.

Condition:

Very good original condition overall, with only minor craquelure visible in the thicker passages of paint. The painting is structurally sound and is presented in a modern replacement frame.

Canvas: 70 × 34 cm (27.5 × 13.5 in.)

Framed: 88 × 53 cm (34.5 × 20.5 in.)

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Symbolism emerged in Europe during the late 19th century as a reaction against naturalism and realism, focusing on dreamlike, psychological, and allegorical subjects through expressive form and colour.

Artists primarily used oil pigments bound with linseed oil, applied onto stretched linen canvas or wood panels primed with gesso ground layers.

Key indicators include natural surface craquelure, age-appropriate wood oxidisation on stretchers or panels, historical mounting hardware, and hand-applied brushwork.

Position the artwork as a central focal point above a sideboard or mantelpiece, pairing rich historical tones with contemporary neutral walls and streamlined furniture.

Keep the painting away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and heat sources, and consult a professional conservator for surface cleaning and varnish maintenance.
