Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chests of drawers from the mid-to-late Victorian era commonly feature solid mahogany construction combined with decorative flame mahogany veneers. Typical design features include rounded top edges, plinth bases, and a drawer arrangement consisting of two short drawers over three long graduated drawers.

Primary woods such as Cuban or West Indian mahogany were favoured for exterior surfaces, frequently accented with flame veneer cuts. Secondary timbers including pine, oak, or deal were utilised for drawer linings and back panels, while handles were turned from solid wood or cast in brass.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, original brass locks, and natural timber movement or shrinkage lines on the back boards. Drawer bottoms often run front-to-back or side-to-side in secondary timbers like pine or oak.

A dark wood chest of drawers provides visual weight and historical character when placed against neutral wall tones. Styling the top surface with contemporary artwork, ceramic vessels, or a modern table lamp creates a balanced, eclectic aesthetic.

Dust the surface regularly using a clean, soft microfibre cloth following the direction of the wood grain. Protect the finish from direct sunlight and heat sources, and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the timber.
