Music Box Circa 1875

Description

A good and large Victorian Music Box with six bells in sight playing 12 popular Airs.

A beautiful instrument playing loud and clear with a beautiful sound and resonance. Every part has been disassembled cleaned buffed and polished. Each tune on the song sheet can be selected to play individually or on a continuous loop accompanied by the bells which can be stopped or played at will.

It has a fantastic list of composers, including Gilbert's and Sullivan, a really lively Box with no hymns or marches

Cylinder music boxes originated in Switzerland during the late eighteenth century and reached their peak popularity during the Victorian era. These mechanical instruments operated via a revolving pinned brass cylinder that struck a tuned steel comb, with later nineteenth-century models incorporating additional accompaniment such as bells, drums, or reed organs.

The mechanical movements were constructed from solid brass gears, steel combs, and tempered steel pins. Cases were crafted from cabinet woods such as rosewood, walnut, and mahogany, frequently embellished with boxwood inlay, marquetry, and protective ebonised interior surfaces.
