Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Crown Derby porcelain originated in Derby, England, during the mid-eighteenth century, gaining renown for high-quality bone china tablewares and decorative ornaments. Small bud vases were produced in significant quantities during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, featuring hand-painted botanical motifs and decorative gilding.

English porcelain from this era typically utilises bone china, a translucent material made from bone ash, feldspathic material, and kaolin. The decorative finishes were applied using overglaze enamel paints for floral detailing and liquid gold applied by hand for gilding.

Authentic pieces generally feature stamped, printed, or hand-painted factory marks on the underside of the base, along with painted artist initials or pattern numbers. Additionally, genuine period porcelain demonstrates fine translucency, precise hand-painted enamelling, and natural wear to the gilded rims.

A symmetrical pair of small porcelain vases works well placed at either end of a mantelpiece, along a sideboard, or within a curio cabinet. They can be displayed empty as decorative objects or styled with single botanical stems to accent classic or eclectic room schemes.

Bone china with overglaze enamels and gold leaf gilding should be cleaned using warm water and a mild detergent applied with a soft cloth. Abrasive cleaners, scrubbing pads, and chemical polishes must be avoided to prevent rubbing away the delicate gilding and hand-painted details.
