Superb Quality Late 19th Century Serpentine Commode in the Chippendale Style of Large Proportions

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality late 19th century (circa 1900) serpentine commode in the Chippendale style of large proportions and of fine patina.

This commode consists of a serpentine shaped mahogany top with moulded edge leading down to three serpentine shaped graduated drawers of superb curl mahogany veneer all with exceptional quality brass handles and escutcheons of large proportions, the drawers all cockbeaded with oak drawer linings.

The commode having rounded corners to either side of the drawers with serpentine shaped sides of plum pudding mahogany veneer.

The commode rests on a finely carved base of serpentine form with central carved cartouche of Rococo influence with rocaille (shell) and scrolling carved decoration along the front and sides leading down to four cabriole legs, each with acanthus carved decoration to the knee and terminating with a pad foot.

It is unusual to find a commode or chest of drawers of this quality with the proportions of an 18th century period piece on the open market and an 18th century period piece such as this would no doubt be in excess of a six figure sum.

This commode is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

Please note: the figure has been used for photographic purposes only and is not included in the price.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale style serpentine commode features a gently undulating front profile combined with mid-to-late eighteenth-century design elements such as carved cabriole legs, ornate brass drop handles, and rich wood veneers.

Primary construction typically utilised solid mahogany and high-figure flame mahogany veneers, complemented by hand-cast brass hardware and oak or pine drawer linings.

Look for hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original cast brass handles with matching escutcheons, deep natural wood patination, and detailed hand-carved decorative aprons and legs.

A large serpentine commode functions as a anchor piece in formal hallways or bedrooms, pairing well with contemporary artwork mounted above or minimalist table lamps positioned on top.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice yearly along the wood grain, keeping the item away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking.
