1878 Miniature London Almanac in Six-fold Brass Glazed Travelling Mount

19th century
Description

A miniature 1878 London Almanac, mounted in a high quality bespoke brass glazed mount, which folds to the size of a single leaf for transport.

Double-sided January to June to one side and July to December the other. The brass case has a very good weight with delicate engravings to the front and sides. All hinges operate smoothly. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian miniature almanac is a tiny printed calendar containing astronomical data, holidays, and practical information, often published annually in London during the nineteenth century. These items were designed for portability and were frequently encased in ornate leather, silver, or brass folding mounts.

Travelling mounts from this era were constructed using brass sheet metal, often machine-engraved or hand-chased with decorative motifs. The individual frames were fitted with thin glass panels to protect delicate paper documents and joined by small metal pin hinges to allow accordion-style folding.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct typography, historical date references, and Victorian printer imprints. The metal casings typically show signs of period manufacturing techniques, such as minor hand-finishing, natural surface oxidisation, and period-appropriate glass glazing.

A miniature folding almanac functions as a subtle accent piece when displayed open on a writing desk, placed within a styled bookshelf vignette, or set under a small glass dome alongside other historical oddities.

Keep the item in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent paper degradation and glass fogging. Use a soft, dry microfibre cloth to dust the brass metalwork without applying liquid polishes that could seep into the glazed paper compartments.
