Flame Mahogany

Thomas Sheraton - 18th century furniture designer, once characterized mahogany as "best suited to furniture where strength is demanded as well as a wood that works up easily, has a beautiful figure and polishes so well that it is an ornament to any room in which it may be placed." Matching his words to his work, Sheraton designed much mahogany furniture. The qualities that impressed Sheraton are particularly evident in a distinctive pattern of wood called "flame mahogany."

The flame figure in the wood is revealed by slicing through the face of the branch at the point where it joins another element of the tree.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency dining chairs, dating from approximately 1811 to 1830, are defined by Neoclassical design principles, refined proportions, and classical Roman or Greek motifs. Common features include tablet top rails, reeded frames, sabre or turned front legs, and X-frame or lyre back splats.

Primary cabinetmakers favoured solid mahogany and rich flame mahogany veneers due to their strength and rich grain patterns. Rosewood was also utilised, often accented with brass marquetry, ebony stringing, or silk damask upholstery.

Authentic pieces feature traditional mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative details such as rosettes or reeding, and natural oxidisation on the timber underside. Seats were traditionally drop-in or webbed, covered in woven fabrics or horsehair.

Regency dining chairs can be paired with modern minimalist dining tables to create a balanced, transitional interior space. Reupholstering the seat pads in contemporary neutral fabrics allows historical wooden frames to harmonize with modern colour palettes.

Maintain antique mahogany by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer bleaching.
