Pair of Fine Quality Walnut Open Armchairs

19th century
Description

A particularly attractive pair of walnut open armchairs dating from the late 19th century, beautifully executed in the William & Mary revival taste. The chairs feature tall shaped cane backs beneath moulded crest rails, flanked by reeded uprights and retaining their original woven cane panels.

The generously proportioned scroll arms are supported by finely turned and carved baluster uprights, leading down to substantial frames raised on boldly turned legs terminating in carved scroll feet. Of particular note are the impressive pierced and carved front stretchers, displaying flowing foliate and scrollwork decoration of exceptional quality. The rich walnut timber has acquired a warm, mellow patina that highlights the crisp carving throughout.

The chairs are currently fitted with loose floral needlework cushions, whilst the underlying cane seats remain intact, allowing the chairs to be enjoyed either with or without the cushions according to preference.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Seating from these periods is identified by tall rectangular backrests, woven cane panels, turned legs, and elaborate front stretchers featuring carved scrolling foliage or foliage motives.

Framing was predominantly crafted from solid walnut or beech, paired with hand-woven rattan cane panels for the backrests and tapestry or needlepoint textiles for the upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved joinery details, natural patination across high-touch areas on the turned arm supports, and genuine mortise and tenon construction underneath the seat rails.

Positioning a pair of high-back armchairs on either side of a contemporary sideboard or using them as accent carver chairs at the ends of a dining table introduces historical texture and contrast to modern spaces.

Keep the timber clean using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a light beeswax polish annually, while keeping woven cane lightly hydrated in dry environments to prevent brittleness.
