Pair of Fine Quality French Walnut Open Armchairs

19th century
Description

A fine quality pair of French carved walnut open armchairs dating from the late 19th century, beautifully made in the Louis XV taste. The shaped cartouche backs are richly carved with flowing acanthus leaves, scrolls and floral decoration, surmounted by an elegant pierced crest, with the carving continuing throughout the frames, arms and serpentine seat rails.

The chairs retain their generously proportioned, serpentine upholstered backs, arm pads and overstuffed seats, all covered in an attractive floral woven fabric featuring floral swags, baskets and ribbons on a soft cream ground. The upholstery is clean and presents very well, complementing the warm colour and rich patina of the walnut frames.

Raised on elegant cabriole legs with carved knees and scroll feet, the chairs display the superb quality and craftsmanship associated with high-end French furniture of the period.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A fauteuil is a traditional French upholstered armchair featuring open space between the seat and the padded armrests. Originating in the seventeenth century and refined during the Louis XV period, these chairs feature curvilinear timber frames and delicate hand-carved ornamentation.

Frame construction traditionally utilises solid dense timbers such as walnut or beech to allow for intricate carving. Upholstery consists of woven tapestry, silk damask, or brocade fabric, layered over natural horsehair and webbed spring padding.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery, peg construction, and natural hand-rubbed patination along high-touch areas like the armrests. Frames typically exhibit fluid asymmetrical floral carvings and cabriole legs characteristic of French cabinetmaking.

Positioning a pair of open armchairs opposite a contemporary sofa creates balance without blocking light or sightlines. Pairing elaborate carved walnut frames with understated, neutral backdrop tones highlights the woodwork while maintaining a clean aesthetic.

Upholstery should be gently vacuumed using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust accumulation in the weave. Keep timber frames out of direct sunlight to prevent drying, applying a light coat of natural beeswax annually to protect the walnut finish.
