Circa 1890 Victorian Gesso and Giltwood Six Arm Chandelier 24"

19th century
Description

Circa 1890 Victorian six arm chandelier with a gesso and gilt finish on a giltwood frame. The six scrolling arms are individually numbered and fitted to the central column using traditional mortise and tenon joints with an interference fit, allowing them to be removed for transport. The arms are carved with scrolls and ears and retain their turned wooden candles. The central column is decorated with a William IV style tulip to the top, leading into a barley twist stem and terminating in a further William IV style tulip to the base. Originally candle powered, this chandelier has been sympathetically converted to electricity and is fitted with six B15 (small bayonet) bulb holders.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Late 19th-century Victorian chandeliers often combine elaborate historical revivals, featuring carved giltwood, gesso moulding, foliage motifs, and multi-arm configurations designed to accommodate gas, early electricity, or candles.

Craftsmen carved the underlying structure from timber, applied layers of gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto smooth and detail the design, and finished the surface with thin sheets of gold leaf.

Authentic period pieces typically show natural wear to the gilded gilding, minor surface cracking in the gesso layer, hand-carved joinery marks, and evidence of historical re-wiring or alteration.

A giltwood chandelier serves as a focal point when suspended above a dining table, in a grand entrance foyer, or juxtaposed against modern minimalist furnishings for textual contrast.

Dust gently with a dry, soft feather duster or soft-bristled brush, avoiding liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes which dissolve gesso and strip original gold leaf.
