Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Andirons, also known as fire dogs, are paired metal supports designed to hold burning logs off the hearth floor. During the Victorian period, these practical tools evolved from simple iron brackets into decorative cast brass hearth ornaments featuring classical finials, crests, and architectural motifs.

Victorian andirons typically feature cast or turned brass fronts mounted onto heavy wrought iron or cast iron rear horizontal bars, known as billets. The iron sections withstand direct contact with fire, while the polished brass decorative fronts face outward into the room.

Authentic period pieces display cast construction lines, threaded iron rod assemblies securing the decorative finials, and slight asymmetry from manual casting processes. Original items also show authentic wear on the rear iron fire bars and natural oxidisation within the recessed details of the brass casting.

Place a matching pair on the hearth inside an open fireplace aperture or resting against a tiled surround to ground the fireplace visually. In non-working or decorative fireplaces, they can be paired with stacked birch logs or placed inside an unused inglenook to create a focal point.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth to prevent soot build-up. To maintain the bright surface, clean periodic brass tarnish with a specialised non-abrasive metal polish, ensuring polished residue is removed from detailed relief areas with a soft brush.
