Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Louis XV provincial bombe commode is an 18th-century French chest of drawers featuring a sinuous, outward-curving front and sides, crafted outside major urban centres like Paris. This style blends the organic Rococo curves of the Louis XV period with robust, practical regional craftsmanship.

French provincial furniture makers predominantly used regional hardwoods such as chestnut, oak, walnut, or fruitwood. Construction relied on hand-cut dovetail joints, mortise and tenon joinery, and sand-cast brass handles or escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-planed timber, hand-carved decorative panels, irregular dovetail joints, and original cast brass hardware showing age-appropriate patination. The underside and drawer construction typically show tool marks and oxidisation consistent with age.

A French provincial commode serves as an anchor piece in a hallway, dining area, or bedroom. Pair it with neutral backdrop tones, minimalist modern lighting, and contemporary artwork above to create a balanced contrast between historical craft and modern aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually to preserve the woods natural patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and severe humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement and cracking.
