Further decorative carvings include foliate ornament, geometric motifs, masks, and beautifully executed narrative panels depicting traditional rural scenes.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian mirror-back sideboards, popular in the late 19th century, are substantial dining room storage pieces featuring lower cupboards topped with a mirrored display superstructure. Designed in Renaissance or Flemish Revival tastes, they provided storage for table linens and silver while reflecting light in formal dining spaces.

These sideboards were typically crafted from solid oak or walnut, featuring relief-carved panels, hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, and bevelled glass mirrors. Heavy mouldings, architectural cornices, and carved figural pillars reflect the sturdy joinery methods of the period.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with subtle variations, period-appropriate wear to original brass hardware, and traditional joinery such as hand-cut dovetails. Original sideboards frequently utilise secondary woods like pine or poplar for internal drawer linings and back panels.

Position the piece in a spacious dining room, expansive hallway, or living area to serve as a strong visual anchor. Balance the dark, heavy proportions by pairing it with modern artwork, minimalist ceramic decor, and light neutral wall tones to create a curated contrast.

Dust intricate carvings regularly using a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, and nourish the timber with high-quality beeswax paste polish applied sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent the timber from warping or splitting.
