An antique Victorian bobbin chair featuring an attractive bobbin-turned frame throughout. The shaped back incorporates turned spindle supports beneath twin bobbin-turned rails, while the legs and stretchers continue the decorative turned detailing characteristic of the period. The generously proportioned seat has been recently reupholstered in a sage green Welsh tweed, complementing the rich tones of the timber. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the 17th century and experiencing a major resurgence during the Victorian era, bobbin turning involves using a lathe to shape timber into repeating spherical or spool-like motifs along the frame legs and stretchers.

These chairs were predominantly crafted from native hardwoods such as oak, beech, or mahogany, paired with padded seats upholstered in wool, velvet, or woven cane.

Authentic examples feature minor hand-finished variations across the lathe-turned bobbins, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and natural surface wear along the timber frame.

A bobbin chair functions as an architectural accent when placed beside a desk, in a reading nook, or within a hallway, adding texture and historic character to modern decorative schemes.

Dust the turned wood frame regularly using a dry lint-free cloth and apply clear beeswax polish annually to protect the grain, while vacuuming the upholstery gently with a brush attachment.
