Description

A handsome 18th Century mule chest of generous proportions, featuring a traditional three-panel front above two useful drawers. The chest displays warm colour and good character throughout. The lift-up lid opens to reveal a spacious interior, providing ample storage. The front retains engraved initials ‘A R’ flanking a decorative brass escutcheon. A particularly appealing piece of period country furniture, offering both practicality and presence.

CONDITION REPORT:

In good antique condition showing the wear commensurate with age. The top has various historic marks, scratches and areas of wear consistent with age. Further knocks, scuffs and surface wear are present throughout. There is evidence of historic woodworm, however this has long gone and been treated as a precaution. The interior is clean and usable with age-related wear. The drawers run as intended and retain brass drop handles. Overall, a lovely example.

Originating in the late 17th century, the mule chest represented a transitional furniture design between a traditional lid-opening coffer and a full chest of drawers. The addition of lower drawers allowed easier access to smaller garments, such as slippers or gloves, without disturbing items packed in the upper well.
