Georgian Sterling Silver Wine Funnel London Silversmith 'Solomon Hougham' 1812.

18th century
Description

A gorgeous silver wine funnel, or strainer, made in Georgian England, bearing the hallmark 'SH'. This is the mark for Georgian Silversmith 'Solomon Hougham' a master silversmith working in London during the Georgian period. Traditional in shape, with its original side-clip still, an elegant piece of silverware in good antique condition, still ready for use today. This practical utensil, which is used to filter wine before it was consumed, before transferring it from the bottle to a decanter. The slight curve at the end of the spout causes the wine to flow slowly down the side of the bottle, thus improving aeration. I highly recommend this Georgian Wine Funnel, for all lovers of wine, whether an occasional wine buff, or serious collector.

The funnel is in good condition for age, but has a couple of small bruises to the silver.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian silver wine funnels were crafted during the 18th and early 19th centuries to filter sediment out of aged wines and port during the decanting process into glass carafes.

They were typically constructed in two separate pieces, including a bowl fitted with a perforated strainer disk and a curved lower spout designed to direct liquid against the inner wall of a decanter.

Authentic pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped on the body or spout rim, including the makers mark, town mark, lion passant for sterling silver, and a date letter.

An antique funnel can be displayed on a dining room sideboard, wine room counter, or drinks tray alongside glass decanters to add historical narrative to modern entertaining spaces.

Wash the item gently in warm water with mild detergent after use, dry completely with a soft cloth, and clean periodically with specialist silver polish to control oxidisation.
