Large Brass & Cut Glass Hall Lantern, C.1910

1900 - 1920
Description

An exceptional brass and cut glass hall lantern of large proportions, c.1910. Complete with period rise and fall pully bracket (detachable).

The swept arms terminate in fine spirals above a brass lantern frame with an intricate art-nouveau design to the top edge. The thick bevelled glass panels each boast finely cut stars which glisten when illuminated. The panel door is opened with a classical 'scroll in hand' finial

There is some light wear commensurate with age as is to be expected, namely some light scratches to the glass in areas and a very small nibble to the circular cut out edge in the bottom panel. There are two small cut outs in the brass lantern frame (please see photographs); these are uniform, in identical places in the frame and thus appear deliberate, likely to enable glass extraction.

The lantern is incredibly substantial and exudes quality throughout.

Dimensions:-

Height with pully attachment: 83cm

Height excluding pully attachment: 77.5cm

Width at top: 44cm

Width at bottom: 30.5cm

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian hall lanterns, produced around 1900 to 1910, typically feature structured brass frames enclosing clear or bevelled glass panels. Design elements often include wheel-cut patterns, such as starburst motifs, alongside cast brass scrollwork suspension arms.

Lanterns from this era were primarily constructed using solid cast or sheet brass and thick plate glass. The glass panels were frequently finished with bevelled edges or starburst cuttings to enhance light refraction.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-finished brass joinery, natural surface oxidisation in unpolished recesses, and slight irregularities in hand-cut glass panels. Original fittings often show evidence of early conversion from gas to electric lighting.

A brass and cut glass lantern is suitable for high-ceilinged entryways, stairwell landings, or formal corridors. The warm metal tones and geometric glass patterns bridge traditional architecture and contemporary interior schemes.

Dust the brass frame and glass panels regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid harsh chemical polishes that can strip natural patina, and clean glass sections using a mild liquid detergent applied sparingly with a dampened cloth.
