Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, specifically designed to sit directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Their placement helped bounce light from candles and gas lamps throughout grand reception rooms while creating an architectural focal point.

Victorian gilt frames were constructed using carved wood as a structural base, coated with gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto form smooth contoured shapes. Gold leaf was then applied using water or oil gilding techniques over a bole foundation.

Authentic period mirrors show signs of natural age, such as slight foxing or oxidisation spots on the reflective glass plating. The rear typically displays hand-sawn wooden backing boards, and the gilded surface will exhibit subtle wear or reddish bole showing through high-contact areas.

Mount the mirror directly above a living room fireplace mantlepiece or position it atop a hallway console table. Pairing the gilded finish with modern paint tones or minimalist furniture creates an effective balance between traditional architectural detail and contemporary aesthetics.

Dust the frame regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a clean artist paint brush. Avoid liquid cleaning agents, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve gesso and lift delicate gold leaf layers.
