Thomas Frye was one of the great ground-breaking mezzotint print makers in Georgian England. His series of female portraits entitled Ladies are classic examples of the mezzotint technique and are highly sought after.

A Georgian reverse glass print, or glass transfer painting, is a technique popularised in the 18th century where a paper print was adhered face down onto glass, translucent paper backing was rubbed away, and oil paints were applied directly to the back of the remaining ink layer.

These works utilised paper mezzotints or engravings, turpentine or varnish as an adhesive agent, hand-mixed oil pigments, blown sheet glass, and carved timber or giltwood frames.

Authentic period pieces display period glass characteristics such as air bubbles, unevenness, and subtle distortion, alongside authentic oxidisation on the gilt frame, wear to the reverse wooden backing, and fine craquelure within the hand-painted layers.
