Antique Yew Wood Windsor Armchair English Country House Chair Hoop Back Windsor

19th century
Description

A superb antique yew wood Windsor armchair of exceptional colour and character. This charming country house chair features a traditional hoop back with turned spindle supports and an attractive pierced central splat. The shaped arm supports and turned legs are united by a crinoline stretcher giving both strength and elegance.

The beautifully figured solid yew seat is undoubtedly the highlight of the piece displaying outstanding grain patterns, burrs, knots and rich natural colour that have developed over generations. The continuous arm rail also exhibits wonderful figuring and patination.

Windsor chairs were originally designed as practical everyday seating valued for their comfort, durability and lightweight construction. Today they remain among the most sought-after forms of English country furniture and are equally suited to traditional and contemporary interiors.

A particularly decorative example with excellent proportions and remarkable timber throughout.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, named after the town of Windsor where they were distributed. They are defined by solid wooden seats into which the legs and backrest spindles are socketed using specialized joinery techniques.

Traditional English Windsor chairs often incorporated multiple native timber species chosen for structural performance. Steam-bent elements such as hoops frequently utilised yew or ash, while seats were commonly carved from solid elm and mounted on turned legs of beech or oak.

Authentic period examples display hand-carved details, hand-turned legs, and irregular tool marks under the seat. Genuine yew wood pieces feature distinct grain patterns, deep patination from age, and subtle wear across the arms and stretchers.

A single Windsor armchair serves as a focal accent piece in a contemporary hallway, study, or living area. Pairing historic turned-timber craftsmanship with neutral modern textiles creates a balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

Keep the timber positioned away from direct heat sources and variable humidity to avoid timber shrinkage or split joints. Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a coat of natural beeswax annually to protect the surface.
