Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian side tables, produced in Britain between 1714 and 1830, typically feature clean architectural proportions, straight or cabriole legs, and functional drawers. Pieces from the late 18th and early 19th centuries often incorporate subtle Gothic or Chippendale design influences, such as pierced corner brackets and moulded edges.

Primary timber was typically dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, chosen for its durability and rich grain. Key construction features include hand-cut dovetailed drawer joints, oak or pine secondary woods, and cast brass hardware such as swan-neck handles with chased backplates.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-planed surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetails inside drawer boxes, and natural timber movement or shrinkage along the top board. Original corner bracket joinery and patinated secondary timber on the underside also verify period authenticity.

A Georgian side table functions effectively as an entry console, compact writing desk, or accent table behind a sofa. Combining the dark mahogany timber with modern artwork, contemporary table lamps, or neutral wall paint balances historic character with modern design.

Maintain the finish by applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, buffing gently along the timber grain. Position the piece away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, or damp areas to prevent warping, cracking, or fading of the patina.
