Pair of Fine English Regency Armchairs

19th century
Description

A fine and elegant pair of English Regency armchairs dating from the early 19th century, retaining their original sophistication and decorative detail.

The chairs are of classic sabre-leg form with beautifully shaped scrolling arms terminating in distinctive scroll supports, enriched with brass roundel mounts. The backs feature turned and reeded top rails above decorative splats centred by floral brass-inlaid roundels, creating a refined and balanced design.

Raised on elegant sabre front and rear legs, the chairs display the graceful lines and restrained ornament associated with the Regency period. The cane seats have been sympathetically renewed and remain in excellent order, complementing the rich colour and patina of the timber.

A highly decorative and practical pair, equally suited to a drawing room, library, hallway or bedroom.

Presented in very good antique condition with minor age-related wear, recently recaned and polished.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency furniture, originating in early 19th-century Britain, is characterised by classical Greek, Roman, and Egyptian influences, featuring swept sabre legs, brass mounts, and refined woodwork.

Craftsmen primarily used dense imported mahogany, rosewood, or painted timber, often combined with woven cane seating and gilded brass roundels or decorative mounts.

Look for hand-cut joinery, original woven cane work, reeded detailing, sabre legs, and natural aged patina on brass mounts and timber surfaces.

These structured chairs serve as classical accent seating in contemporary living spaces, dining rooms, or home offices alongside minimalist furnishings.

Keep timber nourished with natural beeswax polish, avoid direct heat sources, and ensure cane seats remain properly supported and hydrated with occasional misting.
