Art Deco Desk by Betty Joel

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Poirot Art Deco
Description

A fine Art Deco desk by the highly regarded designer, Betty Joel. This pedestal desk with three dovetailed drawers to each side and a central drawer. Both middle drawers have an adjustable wooden dividing section and both bottom drawers with a sliding section to keep files/paperwork upright. Each drawer with circular chrome stepped handles and the original escutcheons, although without a key. The original mustard coloured leather top, with attractive tooling. The leather itself with some marks commensurate with age. The desk is veneered to the four sides, allowing it to sit facing into a room if required.

The Betty Joel Token label to the underside of the central section, dated June 1938, signed by Betty Joel and the makers.

Betty Joel (pictured) designed furniture, textiles and interiors, and had shops in Sloane Square and Knightsbridge. The Studio Magazine featured her work between 1927 and 1937. Today the quality and design of her pieces are highly regarded.

All our furniture is professionally waxed and polished and throughly restored where necessary. This desk is in very good condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Art Deco desks from the 1920s and 1930s feature bold geometric shapes, symmetry, streamlined profiles, and rich timber veneers. Designers emphasized clean lines and functional forms, often integrating circular or angular metal hardware to contrast with polished natural wood surfaces.

Desks from this period typically utilized high-grade timber veneers such as walnut, mahogany, oak, and sycamore layered over solid wood frames. Drawer pulls were commonly made from brushed steel, chrome, bakelite, or bone.

Authentic pieces often feature maker marks, stamped metal plaques, or paper labels inside drawers detailing cabinetmaker credits or dates. Construction indicators include hand-cut or fine machine dovetail joints, solid timber drawer linings, and original period hardware.

Pair the structured silhouette of the desk with a modern ergonomic or leather swivel chair to create a balanced work environment. Minimalist brass or chrome desk lighting complements the period hardware without cluttering the surface.

Apply high-quality beeswax polish along the grain of the wood twice a year to preserve moisture and shine. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to prevent timber cracking or veneer lifting.
