Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A secretaire chest combines a vertical chest of drawers with a drop-front or pull-out drawer fitted with a writing surface and small internal compartments. Originating in the 18th century, these pieces provided space-saving functionality for private studies and bedrooms.

Pieces from this era were primarily constructed from mahogany, oak, or walnut, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, solid drawer linings, and cast brass handles. The exteriors often displayed decorative veneers, cockbeaded drawer edges, and sturdy bracket feet.

Authentic period chests display uneven hand-sawn back panels, irregular dovetail joints, original steel locks, and natural shrinkage line marks along the timber grain. Wear around keyholes and handle backplates also indicates genuine age.

A tall mahogany chest provides vertical storage while serving as a anchor piece in a bedroom, study, or hallway. Pairing dark timber tones with neutral wall colours, contemporary lamps, or understated artwork creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Maintain the surface by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity to prevent warping and veneer lifting.
