Description

A fabulous antique Karadja rug, woven circa 1900 in a difficult to find small size. The design features 3 geometrical medallions on a deep indigo field surrounded by a terracotta border. Lovely secondary colours including a particularly attractive teal in the medallions and a very decorative small rug.

Size: 1.35m x 1.00m (4ft 5in x 3ft 4in)

This rug has light, age related wear, with a couple of small spots which are very slightly heavier (see photos). Fringes and selvedges are secure and it has been professionally cleaned.

Karadja rugs are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a durable cotton foundation. Artisans historically utilised natural vegetable dyes to produce vibrant madder reds, deep indigo blues, and cream accent tones.

Authentic Karadja rugs feature a single-weft construction and a vertical alignment of geometric medallions along the central field. Inspecting the underside reveals asymmetrical hand-knitting knots and subtle natural colour variations known as abrash.
