Description

Senecae, Philosophi Epistolae, or 'Seneca's Philosophical Letters', from the recension of L. Lipsii and Io. Fr. Gronovii, 1649. 12mo. Full vellum binding. Handwritten title to spine.

From the library of Richard Taylor (1781-1858), an English naturalist and printer of scientific journals. He became the joint editor of the Philosophical Magazine in 1822. Richard Taylor's name is inscribed to the flyleaf and notes to the preliminary pages in the same hand. Provenance slip to the interior identifying the same. Flyleaf loose but present.

SYNOPSIS

Seneca's letters, formally known as Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium (Moral Letters to Lucilius), are a collection of 124 philosophical essays written by the Roman Stoic philosopher Lucius Annaeus Seneca near the end of his life. Addressed to his friend Lucilius, the then-procurator of Sicily, the letters act as a mentor's guide on how to live a virtuous, tranquil, and resilient life. They are widely regarded as a foundational text in Stoic philosophy.
