Description

A fine Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre bowl, York Cup shape, dating from circa 1915 and designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones. The bowl belongs to pattern Z4825, a documented Fairyland design combining Orange Lustre, crimson mottling and Oriental-inspired gilded decoration.

The exterior is decorated with a dragon and stylised cloud forms in gold beneath a Greek Key border. The lustre ground displays attractive amber, copper and crimson tones.

The interior is finished in Mother-of-Pearl Lustre with deep blue stainings producing a starry appearance. A geometric gilt medallion with Oriental motifs forms the centre of the design, framed by delicate gilded ornament.

The underside bears the printed Wedgwood England mark and pattern number Z4825. A highly decorative example from one of the firm's most celebrated early twentieth-century ranges.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Developed in the early twentieth century under designer Daisy Makeig-Jones, Wedgwood lustreware features rich metallic glazes, intricate gilding, and mythical or orientalist motifs applied over fine bone china.

These ceramic pieces were crafted from fine porcelain or bone china, fired with iridescent metallic glazes, and finished with delicate gilded transfer prints or hand-painted details before undergoing additional low-temperature firing.

Authentic examples typically feature stamped Wedgwood makers marks on the base alongside hand-painted pattern numbers, uniform glaze iridescence, and exceptionally fine detail in the gilded decoration.

Display the piece inside an illuminated cabinet, upon a dark wood sideboard, or on a mantelpiece where light highlights the iridescence of the interior glaze and gilding.

Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth; avoid abrasive cleaners, chemical solvents, or submersion in water, as moisture and harsh rubbing can degrade the surface lustre and gold gilding.
